Sage Coffee House & Bistro in Quincy Joins the Fight Against Cancer

We are always inspired by local business owners that use their passion as a means for change in their local community. In the case of Charlene Sherman, owner of Sage Coffee House and Bistro in Quincy, each October is an opportunity to rally support for a cause that is near and dear to her.

October is breast cancer awareness month, time set aside to draw attention to the fight against the deadly disease that disproportionately affects women over the age of 50. Although incidences of breast cancer in this country have been declining since the year 2000, the current statistics show about 12% of US women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Breast cancer awareness month is an annual campaign to draw attention to the need for continued research and prevention efforts, as well as early diagnosis, more effective treatments, and a cure for the disease.

For the last four years during the month of October, Sherman has converted her tip jar into a donation jar with the proceeds going to the Confluence Health Foundation. The first two years, funds raised went to support Compassionate Care Fund, which helps pay for mammograms and post-treatment care for patients in need. Now, the donations are being directed to the Your Local Cancer Care campaign, which seeks to bring a state-of-the-art radiation treatment facility to the Columbia Basin. The campaign, a partnership between the Confluence Health Foundation and the Columbia Basin Cancer Foundation, has already raised over $2 million dollars towards the goal.
